Meek Mill will face a new judge.

The Philly rapper has been granted a new court hearing as he tries to get his drug and gun conviction from 2007 thrown out. This time, the hearing will be in front of the Superior Court and not Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley.

Just weeks ago, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner filed an appeal with the Pennsylvania Superior Court asking for a new trial with a different judge, stating that Brinkley’s “public perception of unfairness and bias” has been evident throughout the trial and that she should recuse herself from the rapper’s probation violation case.

“We’re looking forward to the oral argument before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and to, hopefully, having Meek’s conviction vacated,” Mill’s lawyer, Jordan Siev, said in a statement. “In light of the District Attorney’s recent filing, where he supports the granting of a new trial to Meek and the recusal of Judge Brinkley, we hope to have this injustice rectified once and for all.”

Brinkley found Mill in violation of his 10-year probation and sentenced him to 2 to 4 years in state prison. He served five months before being released in April 2018 while his appeal was pending. Brinkley eventually denied his request for a new trial.

The new court hearing will take place on July 16.
